The Village Hall Cup day began under dreary skies for the 16 competitors, with the first of the round robin games taking place in drizzly conditions. But by midday, the sun was peaking through and made the rest of the day very pleasant both for players and spectators.

The round robin produced some really tight games, but the quality of the bowling was excellent so this was to be expected.
Once everyone had played everyone else in the groups of 4, the winners from each group were named as Phil Smallshaw, Andrew Brogden, Andrew Hill and Dave Williams, and from there, the draw was made for the semi-finals: Phil was to play Andrew Brogden and Dave to play Andrew Hill.
Both semi-finals were closely fought, with Phil Smallshaw beating Andrew Brogden 15-14, and Dave Williams coming back from being a few chalks down to beat Andrew Hill 15-9.
And so to the final. Phil Smallshaw took an early lead, leaving Dave Williams 8-2 down, but Dave got the block and fought back to lead 9-8. But once Phil took the jack again, he never lost it, eventually beating Dave 15-9. Congratulations to Phil for a great day’s play and for being the overall winner!

Prizes were presented by the year’s club president, John Medcalf. Below are the losing semi-finalists, runner-up and the winner receiving their prizes.

Congratulations Phil!
Huge thanks go to everyone who helped to make the day a success, whether it was by bringing food or raffle prizes, scoring, washing up, selling raffle tickets, or just making cups of tea. Everyone had a very enjoyable day!
