The first Sunday in June brought a dry, partially sunny day to Hoole bowling green, just in time for the Tony Brogden Memorial Cup competition. As usual, the cup was run as a singles knockout, with first round losers going through to the consolation round for another chance to make their way to the end. A great turnout saw 24 players take to the green, including a few fairly new to the game. Anne Brogden’s boys Andrew and Paul, plus grandchildren Charlie and Alfie also joined in, making it a memorable day for Anne.
Throughout the day, the standard of bowling was high, with some very close games. Peter Carr (chairman) mentioned in his closing speech that the ladies especially had performed very well today!
Even though Anne Brogden lost her first round game, she went on to win all her consolation round games, beating Gill Johnston in the final. Anne is pictured accepting her prize from Peter Carr below.

In the main competition, Janice Cumberlidge and Paul Cafferkey went head to head in the final after Paul had beaten Peter Carr in his semi-final, and Janice Cumberlidge had won to Gail Cafferkey. It was a close-run game all the way, with each taking a few points before the other would take the advantage back. But eventually Janice triumphed and won the Tony Brogden Cup for 2024 – her first club competition win! She is pictured at the top of the page accepting the trophy from Peter Carr and cup sponsor, Anne Brogden.
Another fabulous day with some excellent food brought in by club members, and much fun had by all. Thanks to all those who marked cards, brought raffle prizes, and helped keep the clubhouse tidy, and of course to all competitors!
