For the first time this year, a club competition was predominantly played under wet conditions. Twenty competitors took to the green in five groups of four, with everyone playing others in their group once in the first stage of this round robin style tournament, all playing for the Billy Miller Cup.
Rain did not stop play and the green, having been spiked recently, held the water without issue. After all 30 initial games had been played, the winner of each group plus the three with the best aggregate from any of the groups were put through to the quarter-finals.
The draw for the quarters gave the following pairings, with the victor from each game in bold:
David Bamber vs Keith Roughley
Andrew Hill vs Peter Carr
Adele Thompson vs Dave Thompson
Linda Roughley vs Phil Smallshaw

After a brief interval to draw the raffle, the semi-finals began under much more promising conditions.
Keith and Peter had quite a game, with Keith taking Peter long, and Peter sticking to his tried-and-tested marks, but Peter took the game in the end.

In the other semi-final, Dave Thompson took on Phil Smallshaw and played extremely well, but Phil nudged his woods in front of Dave’s enough times to claim the win.

Glimpses of the sun poking through broken clouds signalled the start of a great final between Peter Carr and Phil Smallshaw. Phil slowly gained the upper hand, despite Peter having played at the top of his game all day, and eventually, the victory went to Phil!

Congratulations go to Phil on winning another trophy this year. Can he retain them next year, or might a new face steal the show?!
At the end of the afternoon, chairman Peter Carr presented the prizes for the day. The four losing quarter-finalists, Lyn, Adele, David and Andrew, were first presented with their prizes.

Semi-finalist prizes went to Keith and Dave.

Peter Carr was presented with his runner-up prize by Dave Williams, who took the lead in running the competition today.

The final prize and winner’s trophy were presented to Phil Smallshaw by Peter Carr. Well done Phil!

Many thanks to everyone who helped make this an enjoyable and successful day, despite the weather conditions! All contributions of food and raffle prizes, the marking of cards, measuring in the rain and washing up were very much appreciated.
This was the last club competition for 2025, and we hope you’ll all come back for more next year (with better weather hopefully!).
