Club History

The first opening meeting of Hoole Village Hall Bowling Club was held on Tuesday 15th January 1952 at 8 pm and was chaired by Mr T. Orritt. In the first season, there were 96 members recorded. Membership fees were £1-0-0 for men and 15/- for women for the season. In the event of the green not being ‘fit for play’, arrangements had been made to play at the Golden Ball. It was agreed that two teams were entered into the Preston & District Bowling League. In 1969 this was followed by an additional team being entered into the Leyland League.

Originally, the Club was set up with male Officers and a separate subcommittee for the ladies section. In 1983 it was agreed that ‘Club Membership be open to ladies and gents’.

The Club continued to develop the grounds over the years. In 1969 water was installed in the clubhouse and the following year an electricity supply. The pavilion has seen further developments over the years which included an extension for the toilets in 1986 and by 2011 the clubhouse appearance was improved with new windows, doors and cladding. In 1980 the club installed floodlights with a further upgrade in 1991. A few years later, in 1985, the first visitors’ shelter was erected and this was replaced with the existing shelter in 2012. The green benefitted from the installation of a water irrigation system in 1993 and this was upgraded in 2019. With financial support through substantial grant funding , from the National Lottery Community Fund, LCC Older People Champion and Much Hoole Parish Council, the floodlights were replaced with new columns and LED lamps during the summer of 2021.

The Bowling Club Committee elect a new President each year. The main role of the President is to support the efficient running of our club. The Club has on only a few occasions had no president, most recently in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID 19 Pandemic. Please click here to see the full list of past presidents.
